Each election adds a layer of red or blue, and every layer thins as more are added. States that vote the same way every time stay solid; states that switch blend to purple.

The popular-vote winner in each state and D.C.; Maine's and Nebraska's split electoral votes are not shown. Every election shown gets an equal share of a state's color: one election is solid, two are half each, nine are a ninth each.
